Overview


The event is directed to certain MFSA licence holders, specifically funds, fund managers, firms carrying out portfolio management and investment advice, and insurance undertakings that are impacted by the disclosure and reporting requirements of the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) legislative framework. It aims at providing the audience with valuable insights into regulatory developments, supervisory considerations and expectations as well as sharing relevant perspectives from key stakeholders.

This event forms part of the Stakeholder Engagement and Awareness component of the EU Technical Support Instrument (TSI) multi-country project that the MFSA is participating in together with the National Competent Authorities of Croatia, Poland and Romania. The project is being undertaken with the European Commission Directorate General for Structural Reform Support (DG Reform).

Technical Expert, Investment Supervision, MFSA

Aaron Vella

Aaron Vella is a Technical Expert within the Investment Services Supervision function of the MFSA, and forms part of the investment funds supervision team. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Financial Services Management and is currently advancing his studies with the International Compliance Association. Before joining the MFSA in 2022, Aaron gained experience across the pensions, banking and investment sectors. Presently, he contributes to the integration of the sustainable finance reporting and disclosure regime within the function’s remit as part of the ongoing supervision of funds, fund managers and related service providers.

Senior Technical Expert, Conduct Supervision, MFSA

Abigail Attard

Abigail Attard is a warranted lawyer who joined the MFSA in 2014 and currently holds the position of Senior Technical Expert within the MFSA Conduct Supervision Function. Abigail is an experienced lawyer skilled in financial services and consumer protection law. She is in possession of a Doctor of Laws (L.L.D) from the University of Malta and was awarded a Masters of Laws (L.L.M) in Financial Services Law from the University of London in 2017.

Senior Manager, Conduct Supervision, MFSA

Bertram Farrugia

Bertram is a Senior Manager within the MFSA’s Conduct Supervision Unit. After graduating with a B.Com (Hons.) degree from the University of Malta, Bertram worked with various insurance entities in the private sector before joining the Authority. Apart from managing the insurance team within Conduct supervision, he is actively involved in various workstreams the Authority is carrying out in the field of sustainable finance. He has a keen interest in consumer behaviour and is currently reading for a Masters degree in Financial Services.

Senior Manager, Strategy, Policy & Innovation, MFSA

Giulia Gaddari

Giulia Gaddari joined the MFSA in 2018 as part of the Authorisations function, where she was involved in the authorisation process for investment funds, asset managers and investment firms. She currently is a Senior Manager in the MFSA’s Strategy, Policy & Innovation Function, contributing towards the Authority’s strategic direction and the policy-making process in relation to key priority areas, actively participating inter alia in the formulation and implementation of policy initiatives impacting the local regulatory frameworks relating to asset management. Giulia holds an MSc in Economics from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan.

Deputy Head, Investment Services Supervision, MFSA

Jonathan Sammut

Jonathan occupies the role of Deputy Head within Investment Services Supervision at the MFSA. His experience encompasses diverse aspects of authorisation, supervision, regulation and policy development relating to funds and fund managers through various roles he held at the Authority.Currently his responsibilities include the transposition and implementation of EU legislation within the local framework for investment services. He also contributes to sustainable finance efforts at the MFSA and represents the Authority at the ESMA Sustainability Standing Committee. Jonathan holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree in Banking and Finance and a Masters degree in Financial Services from the University of Malta.

Senior Analyst, Conduct Supervision, MFSA

Joseph Micallef

Joseph Micallef is a Senior Analyst within MFSA’s Conduct Supervision. After graduating with a B.Com (Hons.) degree from the University of Malta, Joseph worked with various financial services entities in the private sector before joining the Authority. He holds a Masters in Financial Services and has a keen interest in investment services, as well as in sustainable finance.

Chief Officer Strategy, Policy & Innovation, MFSA

Michael Xuereb

Michael Xuereb was appointed as Chief Officer Strategy, Policy and Innovation in March 2020. He joined the MFSA in 2000, heading a number of functions throughout his years at the Authority, more recently occupying the post of Director – Regulatory Development and Financial Stability. Throughout his career he has held senior posts within various public institutions and served on the Board of several entities. He holds a master’s degree in financial services and Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Malta.

Senior Policy Officer, Investment Management Unit, ESMA

Patrik Karlsson

Patrik works as a senior policy officer in the investment management team at ESMA, which he joined in April 2019. He contributes to investment fund policy development, focusing on sustainable finance and disclosure, fund liquidity and leverage, and alternative investment fund management. Previously he worked at the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), Prudential plc, and the British Banker’s Association in EU Government Affairs and policy development on investment fund, insurance and banking issues.

Policy Officer, DG REFORM

Piotr Nowak

Piotr is a European official currently serving in the DG REFORM of the European Commission. He is currently working on reforms to enhance the financial sector and increase access to finance. Before, Piotr has contributed to a wide range of policy areas and played a considerable role in establishing the Union agencies.

Senior Manager, Investment Services Supervision, MFSA

Tiziana Ciantar

Tiziana Ciantar is a Senior Manager within the Investment Services Supervision unit, at the MFSA. She joined the Authority in 2016, with her focus being that on the different types of authorisations that fall within the remit of the Investment Services Act. She also contributes to the MFSA`s Sustainable Finance Task Force and in building the knowledge capacity of sustainable finance within her team. Tiziana holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Insurance and Finance from the University of Malta and Master of Science in Finance from the University of Leicester.

Senior Expert on Sustainable Finance, EIOPA

Ursula Bordas Prószyńska

Ursula leads the sustainability-related disclosure and reporting work of EIOPA, and as such represents EIOPA in the Joint Committee work on the Regulatory Technical Standards on Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, as well as in EFRAG and in the Commission’s Sustainable Platform. Prior to joining EIOPA in 2017, Ursula worked in Brussels as senior advisor at PensionsEurope and as consultant specialising in financial services. Ursula began her career in the European Parliament where she worked on the cooperation with national parliaments. Ursula has a Master of Science in Management from the Vrije University Brussel, a Master of Arts in European Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of Europe and a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics from the University of Warsaw.

Head of Southern and Eastern Europe Client Coverage, MSCI ESG Research

Michela Rota

Michela Rota joined MSCI in 2017 and leads the ESG & Climate Client Coverage team across Southern and Eastern Europe. Michela has more than 10 years’ experience in the financial service providers’ industry. Her team supports leading institutional investors, asset managers, and central banks in ESG & Climate integration, screening, and regulatory requirements. Prior to joining MSCI, Michela worked in a leading financial service provider as Portfolio & Risk analyst. Michela holds a MS in Finance from Bocconi University, Milan.
